Various labs around the country are carrying out multiple tests looking for a way to fight cancer. At the moment, there is at least one lab that is ready to say they may have found what they were looking for. What they were looking for, was a polyphenol known as resveratrol. Resveratrol is 100 anti-cancer drugs in one. Resveratrol works in so many ways to block cancer, researchers can’t find a cancer-promotion pathway it doesn’t inhibit. It is virtually non-toxic since, after oral ingestion, it is quickly metabolized by the liver, attached to a detoxification molecule called glucuronate, which renders it harmless, though biologically inactive, at least for a time. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the US and it is only going to increase in the future years. One of the main reasons for the increase in lung cancer patients is smoking. The population of smokers has risen every year over the past few decades. Smoking in turn has been directly linked with causing lung cancer. Therefore, as the smoking population goes up, so does the amount of people with lung cancer.
Doctors have had little success in developing new ways to deal with lung cancer. It seems however that nature has offered a solution as well. Nature has provided scientists with resveratrol, a polyphenol found in many of natures products, including red wine. Research has shown that resveratrol can inhibit DNA adduct formation in human cells. This is positive news and more advancements and discoveries are waiting to be made.
